  • What We Learn

Why Don't I get it? What is wrong with me? Do you often find your self-asking these questions? If so, you might have a learning disability.

You might even have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which hinders learning skills. If you are struggling to find answers and nothing appears clear, then you might need an evaluation.

If you are attending school, you might want to approach your teachers and let them know what is going on. Your parents can help too, but no one will know if you do not tell someone. If you have ADHD, it is important to get help as soon as possible, since the disorder can cause long-term harm.

Learning disabilities start when a person does not have skills to cope with stress. Often the person will expect more of him or her self. Therefore, we need to learn coping skills before we can deal with the other problems.

Reducing your stressors can clear your mind and help you see the answers to other problems. Even if you have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, it is possible to cope. It is important to seek therapy and avoid stimulants that will hinder your coping skills.

Once you accept you have a problem you can move onto the next step. Instead of setting goals that are out of your reach, set small goals for your self. Each time you achieve your goal you can move onto the next goal. If you do not know your direction, you will need to check your plans. What are your plans? What do you intend to do in life? Having a plan means, you have hope.

If you have difficulty reading then you might want to consider your strategy. When you are reading and find words difficult to understand do you ignore it and read on? Do you toss the book and say what is the use anyway?

Alternatively, do you search through the pages trying to understand what the author is saying? If you are tossing the book, your learning is hindered. When you are reading a book and a word does not make sense, cross reference can help you understand.

In other words, stop for a moment and get out your dictionary to define the word. This will help you grasp the meaning and your reading will move along smoothly.

Do you have problems writing sentences? Is your teacher complaining about run-ons and fragments? This could mean that you are lacking knowledge in English. You might want to consider a tutor or else read all the material available that will help you grasp the concept.

Rereading your paragraphs can help you to see mistakes. For example, when you are writing you might be in a rush. Rereading the information means you will look for adjectives, verbs, nouns, pronouns and other details to write an effective sentence.

If you do not understand verbs or nouns, you might want to reread the definition. If you are reading a book that does not help you to understand, find another book that will.

Researching the Internet can benefit you if you lack understanding. The Internet has a wealth of information, including homework help, tips, hints, and so forth.

When we broaden our minds, we are opening new doors to learning. Never give up! When you feel like a failure, remember failure turned upside down is success. One of the greatest books of all time for learning English rules is William Strunk Jr., and E.B. White, the Elements of Style, Fourth Edition. This book not only teaches you the in and outs of English rules, but also illustrates with examples.

Anytime we have examples, it can help us to see more clearly. One of the greatest examples of all time is Jesus. Not only did he tell us what we needed to do, he set a path for us to follow.

We all speak English in our own way, but we all have the ability to learn as the person we are. Finally, learning disabilities are a mere block in our way. When we learn to cope and move those blocks we are moving ahead in learning!
