    § What Covers Letters Are, What Makes Them Good And Why You Need Them

    Think of your cover letter as the cherry on the cake. This is how you package and present your resume. You are introducing yourself to a prospective employer, make every word and impression count. Here you are asking for face-time to meet, speak face to face – YOU WANT AN INTERVIEW – say and ask for that. Set if up in the language and get them interested right off the bat.
    The ultimate test for an effective resume and cover letter specifically, is whether you get a call-back, yes or no.

    Here are some more tips and recommendations for cover letters:

    Grasp attention in your opening and garner interest
    Ask and get information about the opportunity and job available provide the reasons that you are the best-suited candidate for the role. Include briefly summaries from your resume pertaining specifically to things like your credentials and education, expertise, working with others and independently, interest, profession, why their company appeals to you and the extent of your responsibilities, achievements and more. You are building a case – have them want to pick up the phone – end with a call to action, even possibly suggesting a time for a meeting. Include all your contact information or handy phone number and time to contact you. Close and enclose your resume. Always undersign your letter yourself – DO NOT SCAN IN YOUR SIGNATURE.

    Catch-phrases for your cover letter that will attract and command attention are best!
    There are lots of templates and examples available to assist you with your cover letter. Here is but ONE such example of generic content to have as a bare minimum.

    EXAMPLE OF A COVER LETTER TEMPLATE

    Your full name
    Your full mailing address
    Your City, state, and zip
    Your Telephone number(s)
    Your Email address

    Today’s date

    Your addressee’s full name
    Their professional title
    The Organization name
    Their mailing address
    Their City, state and zip


    Dear Mr. (full name here) or Ms. (full name here)
    Statement that grabs attention and your reason for writing. Mention the specific position, target of your application, resume submission.

    Match yourself to the position and hiring priorities and summarize key content from your resume here. Be brief, concise and illustrative.
    Close and include a call to action.
    End the letter properly as per convention and sign it personally by hand
    Cite the enclosure or attached resume and remember to put it there!

    The resume and cover letter however is just the first step!
