Educator Called A 'Treasure Of Knowledge'
He was a soft-spoken man, whose words and actions spoke volumes. Funeral arrangements this morning are still pending for Craig Brown, a local educator and community activist who was found dead at his Muskegon home on Monday.
Brown, 63, was a longtime psychology instructor at Muskegon Community College and served on numerous local, state and national organizations and boards, including the Urban League of Greater Muskegon, Michigan Education Association, the Muskegon County Museum and Muskegon Museum of Art.
He also was involved with Muskegon Community Solidarity, the NAACP, Community Concerts and Planned Parenthood Centers of West Michigan. He was an active member of Harbor Unitarian Universalist Church.
"I don't think people realize what a treasure of knowledge we've lost," said longtime friend Beverly Ann Hair, a sociology professor at MCC. "He loved his community."
Friends and police investigators say Brown suffered from several medical problems, including diabetes. An investigator for the Muskegon County Medical Examiner's Office has requested an autopsy.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., Brown, who is survived by his mother Laura Brown, and his sisters Brenda, Tracy and Marsha, relocated to Muskegon in 1992. He immediately adopted Muskegon as his hometown, said Daniel Yakes, chairman of MCC's Social Sciences department.
"He was from St. Louis but just adapted to Muskegon," said Yakes, who shared an office with Brown. "He became a Muskegonite."
Brown was passionate about education and had a reputation as an instructor who demanded the best from his students, said Yakes. He was scheduled to begin teaching his three spring/summer semester classes next week. Other instructors will fill in for those classes.
