  • Europe Day Brings Knowledge Boxes To Ankara

The Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey is bringing information boxes to the streets of Ankara to help Turks find more about the factual, practical and fun side of the European Union.

An “i”-shaped information stand is to be placed in the Bilkent Center on May 9, Europe Day. Each one of its 27 by 20 centimeter drawers contains some not-so-familiar information about the EU, its policies and its members. The same stand will reach Tunalı Hilmi Street over the weekend.

The letter “i” forms the logo of the EU information centers, one of which will be opened along Tunalı Hilmi at the end of May this year. This is the second information center opened by the commission, with the first operating in İstanbul’s Taksim Square since 2004. Opening a drawer on the information stand, the inquirers will find out a variety of facts about the EU, such as Beethoven’s “9th Symphony” is the official EU anthem, that animal testing for cosmetics is no longer allowed in the member states, and that the EU helped Turkey fight bird flu by supporting the establishment of new laboratories.

“We want to reach the people of Ankara, including civil servants, university students, politicians, public institutions and other interest groups in the capital” said Rick Flint, head of the Press and Information Section in the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey.

To be as inviting as possible, the EU Information Center (EUIC) Ankara offers “coffee with Europe” meetings in the morning, where people can have their tea or coffee while discussing the latest developments in EU-Turkey relations. It will also host roundtables, workshops and conferences. “We will invite civil society groups, students and associations with an interest in the European Union. This will help familiarize the public with the activities of the EUIC and make it as accessible and welcoming as possible,” said EUIC Director Nazlan Ertan. The center will reply to inquiries by telephone, e-mail or fax.
